About
Jayeel Serrano Cornelio finished PhD in sociology (2011) at the National University of Singapore (with overseas research attachment at Lancaster University, UK). Supervised by Prof. Bryan Turner, Prof. Linda Woodhead, and Dr. Julius Bautista, Jayeel wrote his dissertation as recipient of the highly competitive Asia Research Institute PhD Grant. He also obtained from NUS the M.Soc.Sci. in Applied Sociology (2007) and was awarded the Graduate Research Scholarship for Southeast Asian Students and the Lee Foundation Prize for academic excellence. His undergraduate degree was in Development Studies (cum laude and departmental awardee) from the Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines (2003).
Jayeel is currently a postdoctoral research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity in Göttingen, Germany. His postdoctoral project delves into the political and religious subjectivity of young people involved in faith-based initiatives in Singapore.
Broadly, Jayeel's areas of research include youth, religion, and education. In particular, he is currently preparing articles on the sociology of prayer, "Golden Rule Catholicism" in the Philippines, the state of religion in the world today, the level of satisfaction of Catholic priests, and the problem of billboard advertisements and sexual morality in Manila. His other projects include investigating the religious identity of the youth of Iglesia ni Kristo and designing a cutting edge module for the East Asian Pastoral Institute in Manila.
His professional affiliations are with the International Society for the Sociology of Religion, the British Sociological Association Sociology of Religion Study Group, the International Sociological Association Religion Committee, the South and Southeast Asian Association for the Study of Religion and Culture, and the Philippine Sociological Society.
